Browns are on Their Way
The Browns surprised a lot of people recently by taking quarterback Robert Griffin III in free agency. A lot of people had him pegged to end up either in San Francisco or L.A. However, people are reporting that due to his trust in coach Hue Jackson, he's decided to take his talents to Lake Erie.
I haven't quite known what to think about it. At first, I thought it was a really good move. After thinking about it, I came to the conclusion that he wasn't really going to do very well in Cleveland. I've since thought about it and the impact it will have for the Browns and now feel that as long as the Browns take Carson Wentz at #2, it doesn't really matter.
Right now, the Browns are slotted to start Josh McCown with Austin Davis and Connor Shaw as backups. For those Cleveland Browns fans who have been living under a rock, Johnny Manziel is no longer a Cleveland Brown. So now we've added RG3 and will probably take a QB in the draft even if it's not at #2.
Five QB's? We're probably not going to keep that many. We'll end up cutting either Shaw or Davis (probably Shaw) and try to trade McCown. According to Cleveland.com, there are several teams interested including the Rams, Cowboys, Broncos, 49ers, and Jets. I think any of these could be good trades, maybe picking up a 4th or 5th round pick.
So that would put Cleveland back at 3 QB's which, given RG3's health, should be the minimum number we keep. Terelle Pryor is also still on the team and could potentially step in and perform QB duties. Both McCown and RG3 are stop-gaps. They're bridges. I didn't think RG3 wanted to be a bridge, but I think he needs to prove to people that he can play this game at QB. Yes, he won rookie of the year over Andrew Luck. Which one of those would you take? He won ROTY because he was asked to throw the ball 15 times a game, 12 of which were screen passes. Luck was asked to take a 2-win team, throw it 45 times a game, and put them on his back. Luck led his team to the playoffs the past few years until he got injured. RG3 has barely managed to get onto the field. I don't have a lot of trust in Griffin, but he's got more potential than McCown for sure.
So again, as long as they take a franchise QB in Wentz (or Lynch) then I'm fine with whatever free agent they pickup not named Tebow. RG3 will get to show he's a franchise guy and mentor a rookie. Then he'll go somewhere that he'd rather be.
This could work out okay. Still, take Wentz.
